"God couldn't be everywhere, so He made mothers." While not theologically accurate, this old Jewish saying describes the significant role mothers have in our lives. Not one of us came into this world without a mom.
As a child, I wondered if mom had “eyes in the back of her head” because she seemed to know whenever I was close to getting into trouble.
Proverbs 31 describes a woman with Godly characteristics. It’s interesting that after 30 chapters of wisdom on how to live, the writer ends with a supreme example of an amazing mom.
When God described His love for Israel, He did so with a motherhood metaphor. Isaiah 66:13 “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you”
In the New Testament, Paul describes how he sought to love the Thessalonians just like a mom. 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8 “Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much.”
A mother’s love is also sacrificial. When pregnant, a woman's body focuses its primary attention on nurturing that child developing within her. After her children are born, a mother will continue to sacrifice herself for the needs of her children. She will do whatever she can to assure her children have what they need.
Although no mother is perfect, no picture of God could be complete without some understanding of a mother's love. Moms, thank you for all you have done to prepare your children to be the good men and women of the next generation. Our world cannot make it without you. Thank you for all you do. Happy Mother's Day.
