Our nation, on July fourth, celebrated its independence. The founding fathers knew however that simple independence could quickly do more damage than good. They knew man needed to be dependent on God. It’s been quoted as a principle in our nation's founding documents: “All things were created by God, therefore upon Him all mankind are equally dependent, and to Him, they are equally responsible.”
At some point in your life, you also realized that you had to decide to rely solely on Jesus to save you and provide for you an eternity in Heaven. The moment from moving where we were once dependent only on our own strength, wisdom, or willpower, to an ongoing dependency upon Jesus, began a journey of faith that we are still on today!
Unfortunately, many drift away from depending on God for daily needs and get busy serving and striving to recapture those early experiences. There is a temptation to trade the power of knowing we are loved by God with trying to prove that we should be loved by God.
As a nation, everyone should be striving to improve, but as people of God, we can be resting in knowing we are already loved by God. Both ways, striving or resting should produce character reformation, but only through resting in God’s love will we find true love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Let us remember to depend on God and we will naturally live more responsibly toward God and each other. The more we live in dependence upon God, the greater the celebrations will be!
